Obst sealed the win at the end against Panathinaikos as Bayern defeated them 85–78 in Munich

One could say Panathinaikos lost a game that was theirs, as they repeatedly failed to push the lead into double digits and gain breathing room

Newsroom January 15 09:11

Bayern – Panathinaikos 85–78: They “drank seawater” and drowned in Munich!

There was certainly the excuse of key absences — Kendrick Nunn, Dinos Mitoglou and Nikos Rogkavopoulos. Even so, Panathinaikos had control of the game and a real chance to leave Munich with a victory.

However, in the final quarter they threw that opportunity away, suffering an offensive collapse and allowing Bayern to seize control with big, momentum-shifting shots, ultimately taking both the rhythm of the game and the win. One could say Panathinaikos lost a game that was theirs, as they repeatedly failed to push the lead into double digits and gain breathing room. They didn’t do it — and they paid for it. Dearly.

The efforts of Cedi Osman and Jerian Grant early on, as well as Holmes in the first half, ultimately went unrewarded, as Bayern played ferocious defense in the fourth quarter, turned the game upside down and deservedly claimed the victory.

Bayern Munich – Panathinaikos: The Game

Although Panathinaikos started better (0–4), in less than a minute and a half they conceded a 9–0 run due to three turnovers on three consecutive possessions, falling behind 9–4. The response from the Greens was immediate. Led by Jerian Grant (8 pts) and Richaun Holmes (6 pts), Panathinaikos went on a 12–2 run to take control of the game at 11–16.

Grant repeatedly exploited Obst’s defensive weaknesses, but when he tired and went to the bench, Bayern found solutions and closed the first quarter ahead, 25–24.

The answers came from Alexandros Samodourov, who hit two consecutive three-pointers at the start of the second quarter, preventing Bayern from building momentum. Instead, Panathinaikos took control, involving Cedi Osman as well and going on an 11–0 run to turn a 29–27 deficit into a 29–38 lead at the 16-minute mark.

Despite maintaining the tempo, Panathinaikos failed to fully dominate and paid for defensive lapses. The first half ended 40–43 in favor of Panathinaikos.

Holmes led with 11 points (5/6 FG), Osman had 9 points (1/4 2PT, 2/4 3PT, 1/2 FT, 3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), and Grant added 8 points (4/5 2PT, 3 ast, 2 reb). Overall, Panathinaikos shot 13/20 from two, 5/11 from three, 2/4 free throws, with 9 assists, 5 steals and 5 turnovers.

Bayern, led by Weiler-Babb (8 pts), Obst (7 pts) and Gabriel (6 pts), posted solid numbers and stayed within reach.

The pattern continued after halftime, with Panathinaikos controlling the game and holding the lead (47–52 at 25’, 49–55 at 26’) but never extending it into double digits. Bayern stayed alive thanks to defensive mistakes by the Greens. The third quarter was defense-oriented, ending 18–21, with Panathinaikos up 58–64 and Kostas Sloukas stepping up offensively.

In the final quarter, however, everything went wrong for Panathinaikos — especially offensively, as poor shooting took over. Bayern capitalized with a 7–0 run to take the lead at 67–66 in the 34th minute, completely turning the game around.

German efficiency replaced Greek misses, as Bayern moved ahead 73–70 with 4:22 left, and then 79–74 with 1:39 remaining after free throws by Dimitrijevic, essentially sealing the outcome.

Panathinaikos had one last chance at 79–76 with 1:22 left, but Juancho Hernangómez missed a crucial open shot that could have brought them back into contention. Moments later, Obst hit a dagger three for 82–76 — the final blow to Panathinaikos.
