Winter chill recedes – Warmer weather approaching

Kolydas, Tsatrafyllias and Kallianos explain the evolution of the weather - Frost up to -15°C in the mountains, but return to spring temperatures during the week

Newsroom January 13 07:59

Meteorologists are predicting a gradual rise in temperatures and a return to just above normal for the season over the next few days, following a brief cold snap that brought frost and local snowfall, with the lowest temperatures recorded yesterday in mountainous areas of the country.

Kolydas: Above normal temperatures, little rain

In a post, meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas stated that the temperature is expected to return to levels slightly above normal for the season during the week, while rainfall is forecasted to remain limited.

As he notes, “temperatures are returning to levels slightly above normal for the season, with reduced rain heights,” outlining a milder weather pattern after the brief cold spell.

Christophyllis: cold for 48 hours and then… 15s

For his part, meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillas is discussing the “bitter cold” that is expected to last approximately 48 hours. He said the country woke up on Monday to white landscapes and extremely low temperatures, which will persist until today, Tuesday.

Then, however, he stressed, “we’re back to the 15s,” with temperatures gradually rising “until Sunday when we can’t rule out another cold invasion!”

Callianos: “No promises, but scientific prognosis.”

In a particularly sharp tone, meteorologist Giannis Kallianos returned to the issue of snow forecasts in Attica, stressing that in the end nothing remarkable occurred, apart from a few local snowfalls in the northern parts of the prefecture.

As he explained, no organized mechanism in the Aegean was activated, temperatures were not suitable for generalized snowfall, while neither the precipitation nor the position of the low system was favorable. “The development was fully consistent with what I had indicated,” he said, noting that it was a low-potential and high-uncertainty disturbance.

Kallianos criticized forecasts that “predicted” snow even from the Olympic Stadium and further north, calling it sensationalist information. He stressed that the forecast should be based on data and not on the desire for impressive images, noting that when self-promotion takes precedence, science falls short.

Frost in many areas on Monday morning, 12/01 – Very heavy frost in the mountains

Frost occurred on Monday morning, 12/01, in several continental areas, while very heavy frost was recorded in the mountains, where minimum temperatures ranged between -10 and -15 degrees Celsius. The map below shows the distribution of minimum temperatures in the country and the 8 stations with the lowest minimum temperatures on Monday morning, 12/01.

The snowy and frozen plateau of Nefrokopi from the Sentinel-2 satellite on Monday, 12/01/2026

The ongoing cold invasion was accompanied by significant snowfall on the plateau of Nefrokopi, especially on Sunday, 11/01, with snow depths reaching 15 cm in places.

At the same time, due to the snow-covered terrain, the temperature is kept at very low levels. Indicatively, at 17:30 in the afternoon of Monday 12/01, the weather stations in the region recorded temperatures ranging between -4 and -6 degrees Celsius, while in the morning hours of Tuesday 13/01, the mercury is expected to drop below -10 degrees Celsius.

The following satellite image, taken by the European satellite Sentinel-2 at noon on Monday, January 12, 2026, and processed by the METEO unit of the National Observatory of Athens, shows the snow cover on the plateau of Nefrokopi.
