ELAS: Traffic regulation in Boeotia remains – Alternative routes for drivers

The farmers have left one lane of traffic free, which does not satisfy the competent authorities

Newsroom December 31 05:25

Traffic restrictions remain in force at the farmers’ blockade in Kastro, Boeotia, as police have not altered the current arrangement. Farmers are keeping one lane open to traffic, a measure that authorities say does not meet safety requirements.

According to the latest update from Hellenic Police Headquarters (ELAS) on nationwide blockades and traffic interventions, vehicles on the Athens–Thessaloniki motorway continue to be diverted at the Martino junction when travelling towards Athens. Traffic re-enters the motorway approximately eight kilometres later, at the Kastro junction.

More specifically, traffic on the PATHE motorway is operating as follows: in the direction of Athens, vehicles are diverted from kilometre 125.770 (Martino interchange) to kilometre 114.815 (Kastro interchange) via the motorway’s service road. In the direction of Thessaloniki, traffic is flowing through a single lane of the motorway.

As previously announced by ELAS, drivers heading towards Athens are advised to use alternative routes if congestion becomes heavy:

  1. Exit the motorway at the Anthili interchange and continue via Bralos, Amfiklia, Kato Tithorea, and Orchomenos, rejoining the motorway at the Kastro interchange.

  2. Exit at the Atalanti interchange and proceed through Atalanti and Orchomenos before re-entering the motorway at Kastro.

Police sources say they are awaiting the outcome of a nationwide meeting of farmers, scheduled for Sunday, January 4, at 12:00 noon in Malgara, where the next steps of the mobilisations will be decided.

Officials told APE-MPA that the meeting is crucial, as Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are expected to be peak days for the return of Christmas and New Year holiday travellers, with particularly heavy traffic anticipated.

To prevent congestion and ensure road safety, traffic police have requested that at least two motorway lanes — and ideally one emergency lane — remain open. However, any changes will depend on the decisions taken at Sunday’s meeting in Malgara.
