No more famine in Gaza, but food insecurity remains, says UN

The majority of Gaza’s population continues to face high levels of food insecurity, despite the absence of famine, according to the United Nations

“Following the ceasefire declared on October 10, 2025, the latest IPC analysis indicates a remarkable improvement in food security and nutrition,” explained the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a UN-based organization in Rome.

However, most residents in the Gaza Strip still experience “high levels of food insecurity,” and the situation remains “critical” despite “improved access” for humanitarian and commercial food distributions.

“The entire Gaza Strip has been classified in an emergency situation (IPC Phase 4) until mid-April 2026. No area has been classified in famine (IPC Phase 5),” the organization clarified.

According to IPC projections for December 1–April 15, 2026, “the situation is expected to remain severe, with approximately 1.6 million people continuing to face food insecurity at a ‘crisis’ level or worse (IPC Phase 3 or higher).”

Oxfam France criticized the situation, stating: “Famine in Gaza continues at horrific levels that could be avoided.”

The NGO also noted: “Israel allows very little aid to enter and continues actively blocking the requests of dozens of recognized humanitarian organizations.”
