Eurobarometer 2025: Greeks prefer social media as a source of information

The new Eurobarometer survey shows that social media have overtaken TV as a source of information in Greece - 4 out of 10 follow influencers or content creators in Greece and in the EU

Newsroom October 24 07:04

Social media has now established itself as the main source of information for citizens across the European Union, according to the Eurobarometer flash Social Media 2025 survey, conducted in June 2025 and released by the European Parliament.

In particular, the study highlights a clear shift in information habits, with the majority of citizens and particularly in Greece, turning to digital platforms for information on political and social issues. At the same time, the phenomenon of misinformation continues to be a critical issue across Europe.

Greece leads the way in social media updates

More than six in ten Greeks (56%) say they are mostly informed through social media, with television following close behind (54%).

In contrast, the average European citizen still prefers TV as their main source of information (71%), while only 34% of Greeks trust the press (newspapers, magazines, and online publications) – lower than the European average (41%).

This picture underlines the rapid digital shift of the Greek public, who choose the immediacy of networks over traditional media.
