The former President of France has the right, after his imprisonment, to request release and placement under house arrest with an electronic bracelet

Newsroom September 26 06:01

In the prisons of Paris, located in the 14th arrondissement of the French capital, Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to be taken, according to French media reports.

The former President of France, who was sentenced yesterday, Thursday, to five years in prison for criminal association in the case of financing his 2007 election campaign by the Gaddafi regime, will learn the start date of his imprisonment on October 13.

The maximum period he will be able to remain outside prison after October 13 is four months.

If the media reports about his incarceration in a correctional facility in Paris are confirmed, then most likely he will have a 9-square-meter cell which, like all others, will include a toilet, refrigerator, and television, and he will remain locked inside it for twenty-three hours a day.

In the wake of yesterday’s decision by the French court, both Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyer, Jean-Michel Darrois, and political figures close to the former President of France, described the ruling as unjust, implying that it amounts to political persecution.

Some of Nicolas Sarkozy’s supporters believe that President Emmanuel Macron could make use of his right to grant pardons to convicted individuals. However, Sarkozy’s lawyer stated that such an issue does not arise, as Nicolas Sarkozy wishes to prove his innocence.

Nicolas Sarkozy nevertheless has the right, after his imprisonment, to request release and subsequently be placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
