“Athens Without Cars”: which roads will be closed for cars for 24 hours

Traffic regulations in the center of Athens this weekend - The Festival of the Municipality of Athens organizes a 24-hour event on Athinas Street full of actions, music and surprises for residents and visitors in the framework of the World Car Free Day

Traffic restrictions will be in effect in central Athens over the weekend as the Municipality of Athens hosts its festival on Athinas Street, with 24 hours of activities, music, and surprises for residents and visitors, marking World Car-Free Day.

Significant traffic measures will apply in the city center from the evening of Saturday, September 20, until Sunday, September 21, due to the events organized under the title “Athens Without Cars.”

Vehicle traffic will be suspended from Saturday, 20/9 at 20:00 until Sunday, 21/9 at 23:00 on major central streets of the capital.

Specifically, traffic will be interrupted on:

  • Karagiorgi Servias Street: along its entire length.

  • Agion Asomaton Square: between Sarri and Ermou, including side streets up to the first parallel.
  • Ermou Street: between Agion Asomaton and Athinas, including side streets up to the first parallel.

The Hellenic Police urge drivers to avoid passing through these streets and squares to ease traffic flow and prevent additional congestion in the road network.

Events and Activities for All

During this 24-hour period, “Athens Without Cars” will feature a variety of engaging activities for everyone: from creative workshops, children’s events, bicycles and scooters, to live music performances, storytelling, midnight film screenings, and many more surprises.

For one weekend, Athens celebrates sustainable mobility, offering hands-on experiences that encourage interaction between residents and visitors, as part of a shared effort to promote sustainability in tourism with an emphasis on quality.
