Nea Styra: “The rudders jammed, I didn’t see the reef,” claims the ferry captain

He has been charged with causing a shipwreck and endangering the safety of maritime transport, and remains in custody at the Chalkida Port Authority until his deposition on Friday

Newsroom August 6 06:31

The captain is being prosecuted for causing a shipwreck and endangering maritime transport safety. He remains in custody at the Chalkida Port Authority until his deposition on Friday.

The captain of the ferry “Panagia Paravouniotissa,” which ran aground yesterday on a reef off the coast of Nea Styra, claimed that the rudders jammed and that he did not see the reef.

The captain remains in custody at the port authority until he gives his statement before the investigating judge on Friday.

Meanwhile, tugboats have arrived at the scene and will soon submit a salvage and refloating plan.

Two Coast Guard vessels and an open sea patrol vessel are also present at the location.

The refloating operation will begin once the plan is submitted and approved by the Ministry of Shipping.

Divers and technical efforts underway:

Divers are conducting underwater operations, and efforts are being made to reposition the vehicles inside the ferry in order to lift the bow.

The president of the Styra local council, Nikos Drakogiannis, told evima.gr that technical experts have already boarded the ferry to assess the damage, and a naval architect’s assessment is expected to determine possible repairs before the vessel is refloated and moved to the port.
