Doctors in urgent bid to save 15-year-old in Metsovo — Even incompatible liver a possibility

Doctors in Turin are cautiously optimistic about the young man's condition - They are even considering an incompatible liver transplant if he remains stable

Newsroom July 29 07:11

Doctors at the specialized transplant center in Turin conveyed cautious optimism today as they updated Greek medical teams and the family of 15-year-old Dimitris on his condition.

Dimitris collapsed last Friday after suffering from severe heatstroke, compounded by a serious anhidrosis disorder with which he had previously been diagnosed. He was initially treated at Ioannina Hospital and then transferred to the ICU of the University Hospital of Patras. Early Monday morning, he was flown to Italy to undergo a liver transplant after developing acute liver failure.

The search for a compatible liver donor is ongoing. However, his condition has stabilized significantly, offering doctors a glimmer of hope as they prepare for the difficult days ahead.

According to Andreas Eliades, head of the Pediatric ICU at the Patras University Hospital, the first 48 hours—ending at dawn on Wednesday—are critical, as a compatible liver is urgently needed.

As reported by protothema.gr, doctors in Turin are exploring every available option in their therapeutic arsenal. If Dimitris remains stable, they may proceed with a transplant using an incompatible liver, in a last-ditch effort to extend his life and keep him strong enough to eventually receive a compatible graft.

While such transplants carry a higher risk of rejection and complications, they are sometimes considered in extreme cases—when no other options are available—like that of 15-year-old Dimitris.
