Greece’s Women’s National Water Polo Team—the 2025 World Champions—has returned home in glory, carrying with them the gold medal from the World Championship held in Singapore. The Greek delegation landed at Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos Airport shortly before 7:00 a.m. on Friday, arriving via a connecting flight through Doha.

With gold medals gleaming proudly on their chests, the “golden girls” of the national team set foot on Greek soil, ready to receive the hero’s welcome they deserve. Their historic triumph in Singapore lifted the Greek flag higher than ever before in a tournament that will be forever etched in the memories of sports fans.

This marks only the second time in history that Greece has claimed gold at a World Championship in women’s water polo—the first being in 2011 in Shanghai. The achievement confirms Greece’s lasting strength and significance in global water polo and brings the country its second overall medal in the event.

Under the leadership of coach Haris Pavlidis, the Greek team secured the world title by defeating Hungary 12–9 in a thrilling final held at Singapore’s Aquatic Center. It was a spectacular performance by a dream team that showed unstoppable determination. As the players declared before the opening whistle: “LET’S TAKE IT—IT’S OURS!” And they did just that.

Among the standout performers were three players who played pivotal roles in securing the championship. Ioanna Stamatopoulou was named Best Goalkeeper of the tournament, Fotini Tricha emerged as the competition’s top scorer, and Elena Xenaki earned the title of MVP of the final.

The team was led by delegation head Grigoris Dedes, while Dimitris Kyrkos, Secretary General of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE), was also present at the airport to welcome the athletes.

Joining the reception was Secretary General of Sports Giorgos Mavrotas, himself a former international water polo player, who has experienced similar victorious moments from within the pool.
