Newsroom July 24 11:33

Extraordinary Hazardous Weather Advisory Issued Amid Prolonged Heatwave

The National Weather Service upgraded its previous Extraordinary Weather Advisory to an Extraordinary Hazardous Weather Advisory at noon on Thursday, July 24, due to the persistence and intensification of extremely high temperatures across the country.

Temperatures are expected to remain at dangerously high levels through the weekend, with some areas exceeding 44°C. The heatwave is forecast to ease only in northwestern Greece by Sunday afternoon (July 27), with a more general decrease in temperatures expected from Monday (July 28) across most regions.

Key Concerns:

  • High minimum temperatures, particularly in urban areas, are forecast to remain around 28°C to 29°C, offering little nighttime relief.

  • Ionian Islands & Crete: 35–37°C

Weather Conditions

Skies will remain mostly clear nationwide, with some cloud development in mountainous areas during midday and afternoon hours. Northerly winds will prevail at 3–5 Beaufort on land and 6–7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea from Friday onward. Despite the intense heat, no significant change in weather patterns is anticipated before Sunday evening.

Public Advisory

Authorities warn of extreme heat stress, especially in central and northern Greece, as well as the islands of the eastern Aegean. The prolonged duration of the heatwave increases the risk to public health and infrastructure. Citizens are advised to:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight.

  • Refrain from strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours.

  • Check on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and infants.
