EMY updates heatwave warning: These areas will face extreme temperatures

The National Weather Service has renewed its forecast for the heat wave and the first four days that will raise the mercury to highs

High Temperatures to Persist Nationwide Throughout the Week – Relief Expected on Sunday (July 27)

Temperatures across the country are forecast to remain exceptionally high throughout the week, with Sunday (July 27) likely marking the end of the current heatwave. Starting tomorrow, temperatures in the interior of mainland Greece are expected to exceed 41°C.

According to the latest update from the Emergency Weather Bulletin:

A. In coastal areas of the mainland, maximum temperatures will be 2 to 4 degrees lower than those recorded inland.

B. From Wednesday (July 23), minimum temperatures in urban centres will remain elevated, ranging from 27 to 29°C, especially during nighttime hours.

Detailed Forecast for the First Four Days:

1. Today:
High temperatures will prevail across the mainland, the Ionian Islands, the Eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach:

  • 38 to 40°C across most of the mainland, and up to 41°C in parts of Thessaly and Central Macedonia. In Athens and Thessaloniki, temperatures will reach around 38°C.
  • 35 to 36°C in the Ionian Islands, the Eastern Aegean, and the Dodecanese.

2. Tomorrow and Wednesday (July 23):
Temperatures will rise further, with maximums reaching:

  • 39 to 41°C across the mainland, 42°C in Central Macedonia, Eastern Sterea, and Eastern Peloponnese, and 43°C in Thessaly. Athens and Thessaloniki will see highs of 39 to 40°C.
  • 37 to 39°C in the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese, with some areas reaching 40°C on Wednesday.
  • 36 to 38°C in the Ionian Islands.

3. Thursday (July 24):
The heat will persist, with estimated maximums as follows:

  • 39 to 41°C across the mainland and 42 to 43°C in the eastern regions. In Athens, temperatures will range from 40 to 41°C, and in Thessaloniki, around 39°C.
  • 38 to 40°C in the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
  • 37 to 39°C in the Ionian Islands.
