Guilfoyle receives approval from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for US Ambassador post in Athens

Her appointment must also be confirmed by the full Senate

Newsroom July 16 06:42

The first step in the confirmation process for Kimberly Guilfoyle’s appointment as U.S. Ambassador to Greece has been completed, as her nomination passed through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Specifically, 13 members of the Committee voted in favor and 9 against. Notably, the ranking Democrat on the Committee, Jeanne Shaheen, spoke warmly about the nomination and voted in favor of confirming Guilfoyle.

Now, the next and final step for her confirmation is a vote by the full Senate, according to the prescribed procedures.

Her Senate Hearing

It is noted that during her Senate hearing a few days ago, in response to questions, she spoke about the strategic importance of U.S.-Greek relations and the climate of Greek-Turkish relations.

Following her opening remarks—in which Ms. Guilfoyle spoke about the important role of the Greek diaspora and bilateral relations—she was asked to respond to questions from senators. These focused on Greece–Turkey relations, the F-35 fighter jet program, and the role of Russia.

As she stated, “Turkey has chosen to proceed with Russia on the S-400 missile defense systems, and this raises serious concerns about alignment with NATO’s strategic objectives,” adding that “our allies must be in alignment with the Alliance’s needs.” She noted that her approach would focus on stability and strengthening strategic partnerships in the region.

Kimberly Guilfoyle also addressed the critical issue of Turkey’s potential reentry into the F-35 fighter program, saying that the neighboring country has been excluded due to its own choices.
