Turkey: Imamoglu sentenced to one year and eight months in prison – He is allowed to engage in political activity

The court convicted the former Istanbul mayor of "public insult" and "threats", but acquitted him of the charge of "targeting individuals who have served in the fight against terrorism"

Newsroom July 16 06:50

The former Istanbul mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, was given a one-year and eight-month jail sentence at noon Wednesday, with no restrictions on his political activities.

Specifically, Imamoglu was given one year, five months, and 15 days in prison for “publicly insulting a public official” and two months and 15 days for “threats.”

The court acquitted Imamoglu of the charge of “targeting people who have served in the fight against terrorism”. It is worth noting that he was facing a maximum sentence of seven years and four months in prison.

The prosecutor’s investigation against him in the case was ordered on January 20, for his statements in an interview on a TV show regarding the head of the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office, Akin Gurlek, and his family.

The hearing was held at Istanbul’s 14th High Criminal Court, located on the campus of Marmara (Silivria) Prison, and lasted about 45 minutes.

The 43-year-old Akin Gurlek, as a judge initially and prosecutor later, played a major role in major trials involving prosecutions of opposition figures, including the conviction of the co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Justice Party (HDP), Selahatin Demirtas, and the prosecutions against Imamoglu and CHP mayors in Istanbul’s regional municipalities. He previously served as deputy justice minister.
