High winds strike Santorini: Caravan incident prompts sailing ban

In Emporio, Santorini, strong wind gusts lifted a caravan from the ground, carrying it several meters away - Which ferry routes were modified - According to EMF, winds today reach 9 Beaufort

Newsroom June 29 04:46

The gusty winds that have been blowing since morning on the Cyclades islands are causing problems, affecting both shipping and the daily lives of residents and visitors. A no-sailing ban is in force while in Santorini, the strong winds swept away and smashed a caravan.

In Emporio, Santorini, strong gusts of wind lifted a caravan off the ground, carrying it several metres away. The vehicle spun on its axis before ending up completely destroyed in an adjacent spot, as seen in a video by cyclades24.gr.

The caravan, thankfully, was empty at the time, preventing the worst from happening. The incident was captured by a security camera from a neighbouring house, capturing the fury of the winds and the ferocity of the event.

A no-sailing ban is in place

At the same time, a no-sailing ban remains in effect for several ships departing from the ports of Attica, due to the very strong winds blowing in several sea areas, reaching 7 to 8 Beaufort in some places.

According to the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard, from the port of Piraeus, there are recorded shifts of departures on specific routes.

In particular, the Blue Star Patmos, which was scheduled to depart at 15:00 for the Dodecanese, will finally sail at 23:59.

Blue Star 1, bound for the Cyclades, will depart at 22:00 instead of 17:30.

The Ariadne, bound for Chios and Mytilene, will change its departure from 20:00 to 23:59.

As for the Argosaronic, the routes are running as usual, but only with the approval of the masters, while some companies have cancelled routes.

From the port of Rafina, only the routes to Marmari and Agia Marina-Nea Styra are running. There will be no sailings to the Cyclades today.

At the same time, the ban on sailing from the port of Lavrio remains in full force.

Passengers are advised to contact the local port authorities or shipping companies for timely information regarding any modifications or cancellations of the routes.
