Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Sets the tone for the 2027 elections – Present at the debate on the pre-investigation

Hundreds of party members of the Southwest will come to the party's offices this afternoon on the occasion of the election of the new party secretary - During his speech, Mitsotakis is expected to take stock of six years, but also to set the strategic dilemmas for the next period

Newsroom June 16 07:38

After several months, hundreds of party members of the New Democracy party will gather this afternoon at the party’s offices on Pireos Street to mark the election of a new party secretary. Former Minister Kostas Skrekas is expected to be elected to the post by acclamation, replacing Maria Syringela. He has already spent the last few days making phone calls to gather as many signatures as possible for his candidacy and to discuss his plans with all wings of the party.

The meeting of the party organ, however, will also be an opportunity for Kyriakos Mitsotakis to give a signal…of readiness for the operation of the party mechanism in an electoral battle configuration.

In a few days, the government will complete two years in its second term, marking the start of the second half of its term. Mitsotakis is expected to give the signal ahead of the 2027 elections (or at the end of 2026, if an alternative scenario is discussed).

In any case, this autumn the Southwest enters a congress track, but also the necessary internal party elections that will precede the election of leadership in the party organizations at the prefectural and municipal level, as well as the election of delegates. Also, the congress, which will take place in the last two months of 2025, will elect the party’s new Political Committee (however infrequently and more customarily the body meets).

During his speech, Mitsotakis is expected to take a six-year stocktaking, but also to set out the strategic dilemmas for the coming period. Already, the prime minister has spoken about Greece 2030 at a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, while a few days ago, Kostis Hatzidakis, the deputy prime minister, identified the productive economy, the modern state and opportunities in the laws as key priorities for the next five years. According to reports, already at the strategic level, the Mansion House is “working” on the political narrative on the way to the next polls, in which Mitsotakis will seek a third term.

Date for the Pre-Investigation

In his statement today, Mitsotakis is also expected to briefly address the Tempi tragedy, providing coded answers after the recent twists and turns. According to protothema.gr information, at this time the dominant scenario is that Mitsotakis will be in the Parliament during the debate on the proposals for the establishment of an Investigative Committee on Wednesday and speak, which will be a breakthrough for him, as he had not taken a position in similar meetings in the previous period. The prime minister, however, is seeking a political resignation on the issue, especially after the proposal to set up a Pre-Investigation Committee, which includes as a proposed offence to be investigated that of utter treason.

Stability

Mitsotakis, of course, is expected to raise the major stake of political stability, in a period of tectonic geopolitical upheavals, as was evident with Israel’s attack on Iran. “Now, more than ever, restraint and composure are required. {…I stressed that Iran must not acquire a nuclear arsenal. The solution, however, can only be diplomatic. I emphatically stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages and the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid,” Mitsotakis said in his Sunday note, referring to the telephone conversation he had on Saturday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yesterday, the prime minister also had a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
