Imamoglu: The Constantinople General Prosecutor’s Office requested the blocking of his X account

The Constantinople Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation, believing that in an earlier post, Ekrem Imamoglu may have incited citizens to commit a crime

Newsroom May 8 03:50

At the request of the General Prosecutor’s Office access to the account on X of jailed Constantinople Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has been denied.

The Communication Directorate’s “Counter-Disinformation Center” said that “the Constantinople Prosecutor’s Office has launched an ex-officio investigation, considering that the post made on April 24, 2025 from the X account of detained prisoner Ekrem Imamoglu’s X account may constitute the offense of public incitement to commit a crime regulated by Article 214 of the Turkish Penal Code.”

Following the prosecution’s request to the Turkish Information Technology Communications Authority and providers, the request was forwarded to the X platform, which blocked access from Turkey to Ekrem Imamoglu’s account. However, access to the jailed mayor’s account is still possible from abroad.

In the controversial post of April 24, Ekrem Imamoglu addressed the people saying, among other things, “Either justice or misery… There is no other choice before us now. I have filed a lawsuit against those who caused the greatest disgrace in the history of Turkish justice and I will continue to do so. The price paid by the country and the rights of the people violated by a handful of disreputable people are beyond description.” In the same post, Imamoglu made the following appeal to the people: “This handful of disreputable people are causing great damage to both the nation and the state. Denounce, do not be silent and raise your voice.”

Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Ojgyur Ozel went to the Silivria prison where Imamoglu is being held after his arrest on March 19 to meet with him.

MPs from the CHP, from which Imamoglu hails, reacted by changing their social media profile pictures with the Constantinople mayor’s photo. Ankara Mayor Mansour Yavas announced that he is making available to Imamoglu the account he used in his election campaign.

Police arrested Imamoglu on March 19, sparking the largest protests in Turkey in a decade. He was taken into custody four days later pending trial on corruption charges, which he denies.
