Yorgos Lanthimos: KAS rejects request to film on the Acropolis

The multi-award-winning Greek director wanted to shoot the finale of his new film on the Sacred Rock

Newsroom April 2 08:00

The multi-award-winning Greek director had hoped to shoot the final scenes of his new film on the Sacred Rock, but will now need to find an alternative location, as he was unable to secure the necessary permit. The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) issued a unanimous negative opinion on Lanthimos’ request during its session yesterday.

The production company behind the film Either Or Productions had formally applied to the Ministry of Culture’s council, requesting permission to film on the Acropolis on April 10. The request specified that they would need access to the archaeological site for four consecutive days in total, to allow for setup and completion.

However, the prospect of closing the Acropolis to the public for four days, combined with the content of the scenes to be filmed — which reportedly depict widespread devastation and scattered corpses, just before hope and life are reborn atop the world-renowned symbol of civilization — appear to have been the key factors that led KAS members to deny the request.

In an effort to find a compromise, a council member suggested the production consider filming on Philopappos Hill instead, but the production company representatives did not appear interested in the alternative.

Lanthimos’ new film, Bugonia, set for release in November 2025, is a remake of the 2003 Korean cult film Save the Green Planet by director Jang Joon-hwan, originally produced by CJ Entertainment — the company behind the Oscar-winning Parasite in 2019.

In Lanthimos’ version, starring his long-time collaborator Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons — with whom he has also worked before — the story follows two young men obsessed with conspiracy theories who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major corporation, believing she is an alien sent to destroy Earth.

Described as a black science fiction comedy with eccentric flair, elements of romantic comedy, and gripping thriller moments, the film is said to present a demanding blend of genres — one that Lanthimos has proven he can master with success.

Most of the film’s shooting has reportedly already taken place in England and New York, with Athens and the Acropolis envisioned as the perfect backdrop for its surprising conclusion. However, after the rejection from KAS, Lanthimos and his team — including Succession screenwriter Will Tracy — will now have to revise their original plans.
