SYRIZA leader accuses Greece’s lenders of fiscal waterboarding

The main opposition leader reiterated that he wanted Greece to stay in the euro zone

Newsroom January 13 12:39

Main opposition Radical Left Coalition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras accused the country’s international lenders of subjecting Greece to constant fiscal waterboarding in an open letter to the German people, published by Handelsblatt newspaper.

In his article, titled “The truth you were never told about Greece”, Mr. Tsipras reassured the German taxpayers that they have nothing to fear from a SYRIZA government, underlying that the goal of his party is not to pursue a confrontation with the country’s partners, to get more credits or a license for new deficits.

On the contrary, SYRIZA wants to stabilize the country, achieve a balanced primary budget and put an end to the ongoing bloodletting from German and Greek taxpayers that started four years ago, the party’s leader underlined.

However, Mr. Tsipras noted that austerity measures are preventing Greece from achieving those goals, as it is constantly exposed to “fiscal waterboarding” by its creditors.

Regarding the notion that Greece’s economy has stabilized, Mr. Tsipras underlined that this is an arbitrary conclusion, noting that while the economy grew 0.7% in the third quarter of 2014, the recession is far from over because inflation was a negative 1.8%.

“The aim of this shameful strategy of mentioning false statistics is to suppport the effectiveness of troika policies,” said Mr. Tsipras.

Finally, the main opposition leader reiterated that he wanted Greece to stay in the euro zone.

“Our goal is to reach a new agreement, within the euro zone, that would involve all the countries and would allow the people of Greece to breathe, to create and to live in dignity. In order to achieve this goal we must make our debt sustainable and promote growth which is the only way out of the recession,” the leftist leader underlined.
