Armenia: We are ready to sign peace agreement with Azerbaijan, says Yerevan

Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that a draft peace agreement with Azerbaijan has been finalized by the Armenian side, and Yerevan is ready to discuss setting a date and location for signing a final agreement—bringing an end to decades of wars between these two Caucasus nations.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been engaged in wars since the late 1980s, when Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave predominantly inhabited by Armenians, seceded from Azerbaijan with Armenia’s support.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan militarily reclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh, forcing nearly all of the 100,000 Armenians in the region to flee to Armenia.

Both sides have long stated their intention to sign a treaty to end the longstanding conflict, but they have been at odds for years over the terms of such an agreement.

“The peace agreement is ready for signing. The Republic of Armenia is prepared to begin consultations with the Republic of Azerbaijan to determine the date and location for signing the agreement,” the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in its announcement.
