Donald Trump: I have spoken with Xi, our personal relationship is very good

The US president did not specify when exactly this telephone conversation between the two leaders took place or the issues discussed

Newsroom February 11 01:44

U.S. President Donald Trump said he has spoken with his Chinese counterpart Xi since taking office on Jan. 20, but did not elaborate further on the issues they discussed.

Trump made the comment in an interview broadcast yesterday, Monday, on Fox News.

“Yes (…) I’ve talked to him and I’ve talked to his people,” Trump replied when asked if he has had any conversations with the Chinese president since being sworn in.

“We have a very, very good personal relationship,” the U.S. president added, without specifying exactly when this phone call between the two leaders took place or the topics discussed.

Trump said last week that he was in no hurry to talk to Xi to try to prevent a new trade war between the world’s two largest economies. A conversation between the two leaders is seen as crucial to easing or delaying trade tariffs.

The White House has so far not responded to a Reuters request for comment on Trump’s interview with Fox News.

Trump and Xi had spoken just before the former took office on January 20 and had discussed several topics, including TikTok, trade and Taiwan.

Asked today at his usual press conference, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not comment directly on the US president’s statement, only referring reporters to the “scheduled” phone call the two leaders had before Trump took office.

“On January 17, President Xi Jinping had a scheduled telephone conversation with US President Trump, and the Chinese side has already issued the relevant press release,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiajun told reporters.
