Mitsotakis: Greater accountability for ministers and ministries – Tempi investigation in Its final stages

Agenda includes bills on banning tobacco and alcohol sales to minors and the introduction of judicial guardianship

Newsroom January 31 12:02

The Cabinet convenes today at the Maximos Mansion, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, following the second round of voting in Parliament for the election of the President of the Republic.

Prime Minister’s Opening Statement

“Today marks the end of a difficult week, overshadowed by the tragedy of Tempi, as we approach the final stages of investigations into this national trauma.

Ultimately, it is the judiciary that will evaluate and determine the course of justice. The government majority will present its positions both in Parliament and to society.

Our primary responsibility remains clear: intensifying our efforts and delivering tangible results. This is the response citizens expect from us. Every ministry and minister must strive for greater efficiency and impact. We have encountered challenges before, and this is no different.

I call for collective vigilance and acceleration. Projects that previously took a year must now be completed in a matter of months.

As we enter our sixth year in office, expectations are higher—especially when tackling systemic issues that have persisted for decades. We must act swiftly and decisively to outpace stagnation. This will be the ultimate measure of our success.

In an era where populism is on the rise, we must safeguard the stability of governance. It is a mistake to exploit the rightful demand for justice as a political weapon against the government.

Parties that wish to align themselves with the European democratic framework should reflect on whether their stance inadvertently fuels populism.

Our response will be evident through concrete measures that enhance citizens’ daily lives.”
