Trump threatens the Brics countries with 100% tariffs

"We will demand a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new Currency Brics, nor support any other Currency to replace the strong US Dollar otherwise they will face 100% tariffs"

Newsroom January 31 06:41

Donald Trump yesterday, Thursday, reiterated his threat to impose “100%” tariffs on the Brics group after he reiterated that he will impose 25% tariffs on products imported into the US from Mexico and Canada starting tomorrow, Saturday.

“The notion that Brics members are trying to walk away from the dollar and we are left holding the bag is FINISHED,” the US president said in a post on Truth Social.

“We will demand a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new Currency Brics, nor support any other Currency to replace the strong US Dollar, otherwise they will face 100% tariffs,” Trump added in his post, which was almost identical to the one he had made on November 30.

“There is no way Brics will replace the US Dollar in International Trade or anywhere else and any Country that tries will have to say welcome to tariffs and goodbye to America!” he stressed.

The Brics group comprises 10 countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The Brics countries say they wish to limit Western domination of the world. They do not have a common currency, but discussions to that end have intensified since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the imposition of Western sanctions on Moscow.

However, at the Brics meeting in late October, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the idea of a common currency “has not yet matured.”

Parliamentary elections set for April 12 in Hungary as Orbán appears weakened in polls

Shortly after being sworn in as president of the US, Trump announced that he wanted to impose 25% tariffs on products imported into his country from Mexico and Canada, two countries that signed a free trade agreement with Washington during his first term.

The Republican wants to use the tariffs to pressure Mexico and Canada to help the US limit the entry of drugs, mainly phenentanyl, as well as illegal immigrants, into the country.

Yesterday, Thursday, Trump confirmed his intention to impose tariffs on the two US neighbours, adding that overnight he would decide whether to exempt their oil-producing countries from the measure.
