Meteorologists respond to February deep freeze scenarios – High uncertainty

Thodoris Kolydas and Klearchos Marousakis used charts and analyses to explain why it's still too early for such forecasts

Newsroom January 30 09:54

Recently, Greece has experienced mild weather, with sunshine across most of the country and seasonally normal temperatures.

However, some reports have speculated about an upcoming deep freeze in February, bringing snow and plummeting temperatures.

Kolydas: “We won’t make predictions for such a distant period”

Thodoris Kolydas addressed these speculations in a post, emphasizing that it’s too early for such forecasts. “We won’t make predictions for such a distant period,” he stated.

Despite the current mild temperatures, there has been ongoing speculation about an impending cold snap. Kolydas pointed out that earlier predictions did not materialize, and now expectations have shifted to after February 6, 2025. However, he reiterated that it remains too soon for definitive conclusions.

Cold Spell Patterns Explained

Kolydas detailed how cold air masses typically impact Greece, emphasizing that their intensity, duration, and exact location vary depending on atmospheric conditions. While some preliminary forecasts suggest a disturbance early next week, he stressed that it is premature to predict a severe cold wave.

Marousakis: “There is still great uncertainty”

Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis also weighed in, highlighting the high uncertainty surrounding February’s weather patterns. He shared a chart showing diverging forecast scenarios after February 4, making it difficult to predict the exact conditions.

While a shift to colder weather is likely, the extent of the temperature drop and potential snowfall locations remain unclear. Marousakis emphasized the importance of waiting for forecasts to stabilize before drawing conclusions.

For now, meteorologists urge caution, as both a cold snap and relatively normal temperatures remain equally possible in the coming weeks.
