Lavrio: Tensions rise at City Council

The residents of Lavrio protested against the plans of the municipal authority regarding the creation of a garbage factory at the BIO.PA Keratea

Newsroom January 29 07:08

Disapprovals, slogans and even a chair hurled toward the mayor punctuated Tuesday night’s emotional city council meeting in Lavrio.

In the videos released by protothema.gr, the moment of the departure of the mayor of Lavrio, Dimitris Loukas, has been recorded, with one of the attendees throwing a chair at him.

In the second video, some can be heard shouting “liar, liar” at the mayor of Lavrion.

The residents of Lavrio protested against the plans of the municipal authority to create a garbage factory at the BIO.PA Keratea.

The city council began at about 18:00, in a heated atmosphere as the assembled people demanded that the waste issue be discussed as well.

Finally, an hour later, the residents, realizing that they were not listened to, began intense protests, resulting in the result, as reported by mesogianews.gr, both the mayor Dimitris Loukas, and the councillors of his faction to flee!

Afterward, residents gathered outside the town hall, continuing their protest. After the end of the episodic city council, the mayor of Lavreotiki denounced that the protesting residents ripped out the electric panel in the city council chamber to prevent the meeting from continuing and even spoke of the bashing of elected officials.

In his statement, the mayor of Lavreotiki Dimitris Loukas said:

“Today’s city council was interrupted, as a group of our fellow citizens tore the electrical panel of the hall so that the process cannot continue.

It is unacceptable to interrupt and violently obstruct the top democratic process of our municipality.

It is unacceptable that elected officials of the city government are being browbeaten.

It is unacceptable to use lies and slander to cultivate a climate of concern and doubt among the residents of Keratea about an issue that has been closed for many years.

It is unacceptable to abolish the necessary dialogue and information and to replace it with tensions and violence.

Such practices are only followed by those who fear dialogue, open information and ultimately the truth.

We stand firmly by our own code of values:

– We honestly inform our citizens

– We uphold democratic processes

– We defend our municipality and the quality of life of our citizens.

– We are committed to the truth of our works and actions. A poisonous lie may infiltrate easily and quickly, but at the end of the day, truth prevails.”
