AADE: 200 reports of tax evasion daily – The fines that “burn”

Citizens unveil "under-the-table" deals - 43,635 suspicious receipts found, 74,944 complaints filed in 2024

Newsroom January 23 08:52

Reporting has become a daily affair, with complaints about tax evasion, smuggling, and corruption breaking all records! The special AADE platform receives over 200 complaints daily, with a total of 74,944 reports recorded in 2024 regarding tax and customs violations, smuggling, and corruption involving public officials.

At the forefront is the Appodixi application, downloaded by more than 300,000 citizens. Through the app, users scan receipts and send suspicious data for investigation.

The outcome? In 2024 alone, 43,635 receipts were reported for tampered details or failure to transmit them to the tax system. There are numerous cases where this app helped authorities uncover “under-the-table” funds and businesses hiding turnovers worth millions.

The whistleblowing doesn’t stop there. Through the AADE platform, citizens report tax evasion, smuggling, and corruption involving public officials, either anonymously or using their names. The numbers speak for themselves: 27,514 reports on tax violations, 345 on smuggling, and 3,450 on corruption. Each complaint undergoes automated risk analysis to prioritize the most critical cases.

Businesses caught evading taxes pay a heavy price. Fines start at €10,000 for smaller companies and can reach €30,000 for larger businesses with double-entry bookkeeping systems.

Rewards for Effective Reporting

Adding to the mix is the pending decision to activate a measure granting financial rewards of up to €3,000 for reports that lead to concrete results in tax evasion cases. According to officials, the delay stems from legislative adjustments needed to ensure safeguards for whistleblowers, protecting them from potential identity exposure.

Under the current legislative framework, financial rewards amount to ten times the transaction value of the retail receipt reported, including applicable VAT, and are never less than €100 or more than €3,000. If the report concerns multiple tax documents issued by the same entity, the reward is calculated based on the document with the highest value.
