Famellos: Call for a common progressive ballot and the return of members to SYRIZA

"There is still space and time to support a joint candidacy for President of the Republic," he stressed – What he said about collaboration with PASOK and New Left – "SYRIZA's goal is to once again become the main opposition party."

Newsroom January 22 04:53

A call for those who have departed to return to SYRIZA and form a common progressive ballot was made by SYRIZA President Sokratis Famellos.

“Our goal is for SYRIZA–PS to once again become the main opposition party,” Mr. Famellos emphasized on Action 24, issuing an invitation to all who disagreed or withdrew from SYRIZA’s political action. “Because this concerns MPs who are independent or who might currently belong to other parties, we should not view politics through such a narrow lens. We have made a proposal for everyone who disagreed or withdrew from SYRIZA’s political activities. Without conditions or trade-offs, we have extended an invitation to resolve disagreements from all moments in time. It is both an invitation and a wake-up call to democratic citizens,” he added.

On Parliamentary Collaboration
When asked whether there is space for parliamentary collaboration, the SYRIZA president clarified that this entails two separate answers. He stated that partnerships would occur not only with the New Left but also with PASOK, citing SYRIZA’s proposal to abolish burial taxes and PASOK’s stance on insurance premiums as examples.

On Cooperation with PASOK
Mr. Famellos noted that discussions about potential cooperation with PASOK have not yet commenced but clarified that alliances should not only aim to challenge and defeat Kyriakos Mitsotakis but also to implement a progressive program.

Tsoukalas: ‘We will submit our own proposal for constitutional revision, we would like an agreement with SYRIZA and New Left on Article 86’

“To be precise, there is a public parliamentary debate that was expressed through the motion of no confidence. We have clearly stated: in the upcoming national elections, there needs to be a coalition formation—a ballot that not only opposes Mr. Mitsotakis but also defeats him and implements a progressive program that reflects society and engages with it. To achieve this, it must be a party that is not merely in opposition but has government-like characteristics. It must be a progressive party strong enough to act as a catalyst and spark this discussion for a collaborative proposal. SYRIZA must grow stronger, expand, and maintain this serious momentum,” he remarked.

On the Election of the President of the Republic
Mr. Famellos also touched on the process for electing the new President of the Republic, saying, “There is space and time to support a joint candidacy.”

The SYRIZA president defended the choice of Ms. Katseli. “When we put forward a proposal, it was because we didn’t want to be defined by others or wait for Mr. Mitsotakis. Against the policies of Mr. Mitsotakis and his decision to propose an active MP as President of the Republic—contrary to post-dictatorship practices and the spirit of the Constitution—we proposed, even belatedly, a collaboration centered on Ms. Katseli,” he stated pointedly.
