Archaeologists have discovered an extravagant bath in Pompeii, possibly the largest ever found

Dating back up to 2,000 years – A discovery described as "once in a century"

Newsroom January 17 10:07

A luxurious bathhouse was uncovered during a major excavation in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. As the BBC notes, it is a discovery that occurs “once in a century.” Archaeologists have unearthed this opulent private bathhouse – potentially the largest ever found there – featuring hammam-style rooms, exquisite artworks, and an enormous pool.

The bathhouse is part of a luxurious residence discovered over the past two years, which dates back as far as 2,000 years.

Photos of the luxurious residence discovered in the past two years:

“These spaces are truly part of the ‘Pompeii phenomenon’ – it’s almost as if people had just left a minute ago,” Dr. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, who unveiled the bathhouse, told BBC News.

It is worth recalling that Pompeii was one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire. Its climate was mild, and its soil fertile. Many homes had views of the sea. The city covered an area of 60 hectares, with eight gates and eleven watchtowers for the safety of its citizens.

Pompeii was also home to opulent residences and many wealthy citizens, who spent their time in luxurious thermal baths and pools.

The affluent citizens of Pompeii owned lavish villas with colonnaded courtyards, intricate mosaics on the floors, and impressive frescoes and murals adorning the walls.
