Weather Update: Revised EMY alert – Where it will rain today

Zakynthos recorded the highest rainfall levels yesterday - EMY forecast until Saturday

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its severe weather warning, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms, with frequent lightning and localized hail in the southern Ionian Islands, Western Greece, and the Western Peloponnese.

Detailed Forecast:

The weather deterioration is expected to continue until Wednesday, November 13, 2024, mainly affecting Western Greece. The forecast includes strong rain and thunderstorms accompanied by frequent lightning strikes and local hail.

Today (Tuesday): The heaviest rainfall is expected in the Southern Ionian Islands, Western Central Greece, and the Western Peloponnese.

Tomorrow (Wednesday): The adverse weather will expand to cover the entire Ionian Sea, Epirus, Western Central Greece, the Western Peloponnese, and potentially parts of Western Thessaly.

Warning for Three Islands:

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafilias warned on Facebook about significant rainfall over the next 48 hours on the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Ithaca. Additionally, heavy rain is expected in Lefkada, Achaia, Ilia, and Aetolia-Acarnania.

Meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas also highlighted that strong weather phenomena are expected in the southern Ionian Islands, Western Central Greece, and the Western Peloponnese. Starting Wednesday, rain will spread across the entire Ionian region, Epirus, Western Central Greece, the Western Peloponnese, and potentially Western Thessaly.

Unstable Weather Throughout the Week:

Yiannis Kallianos noted that the weather this week will remain unstable, with the most intense effects expected in Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and Ithaca. He also forecasts heavy rain in coastal parts of Epirus, Western Central Greece, and the Western Peloponnese. According to predictive models, storms may also develop in the Attica region late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Highest Rainfall Recorded in Western Greece:

According to data from meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens, the most significant rainfall on Monday, November 11, was recorded in Western Greece, particularly in the Ionian Islands. The table below shows the areas with the highest rainfall until 9 PM on Monday.

Cloudy skies with rain and scattered thunderstorms are expected in Western Greece, parts of central, eastern, and southern mainland Greece, parts of Crete, and the Sporades Islands. Heavy rainfall, including possible hail, is forecast in the Ionian Islands and parts of Western mainland Greece. In Central and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, rain is expected mainly in the afternoon. Occasional snowfall may occur in mountainous areas.

  • Western Macedonia: -2°C to 8°C
  • Northern Greece: 2°C to 14-16°C
  • Thessaly: 6°C to 12-14°C
  • Epirus: 6°C to 16-17°C
  • Mainland areas: 8°C to 18-20°C
  • Ionian Islands: 12°C to 17-18°C
  • Aegean Islands and Crete: 13°C to 20°C, with peaks up to 22-23°C in the Dodecanese and Crete.

Winds:

  • Northeast winds in the Aegean Sea at 3-5 Beaufort.
  • In the Ionian Sea, east-southeast winds at 5-6 Beaufort, strengthening to southeast winds up to 7 Beaufort in southern areas.
