Closed roads in Athens today: Traffic regulations due to the authentic Marathon

All traffic regulations that will be in effect gradually from today until Sunday

Athens is getting ready to welcome tens of thousands of runners from 152 countries this weekend for the 41st Authentic Marathon.

The race weekend kicks off today with the 5km and the 5km OPAP Universities Night Run and will culminate tomorrow with the classic 42.195 km route. On the same day, the 10 km OPAP race will also start.

The road races will impact traffic until Sunday, November 10, 2024.

According to an announcement by the Greek Police (EL.AS), drivers are urged to avoid driving and parking on streets and avenues and to follow the traffic police’s instructions to ensure smooth conduct of the races and prevent traffic issues.

Detailed Traffic Announcement by EL.AS with Traffic Restrictions:

Today, November 9, 2024, from 17:00 to 20:25, two consecutive road races (5 km & 5 km Universities Night Run) will take place from Vasilissis Amalias Ave. (Syntagma) to the Panathenaic Stadium, along the route:

  • Vasilissis Amalias Ave. – Panepistimiou St. – Riga Fereou St. – right to Akadimias St. – left to Vasilissis Sofias Ave. – U-turn at the intersection with NIMITS Hospital – Vasilissis Sofias Ave. – Irodou Attikou St. – Panathenaic Stadium.

Public Transportation Adjustments:

STASY, aiming to serve passengers better, will increase metro service frequency from 14:00-19:00 today and on Sunday from 7 AM until the end of the Marathon. For this reason, two additional trains will be scheduled on each of the three metro lines.

For the tram Line 6 “Pikrodafni – Syntagma,” by EL.AS orders, services will terminate at “Fix” station from 2 PM Saturday until 8:30 PM Sunday.

On Sunday, November 10, Metro Lines 2 and 3 will operate from 5 AM, half an hour earlier than usual. It should be noted that Metro Line 1 starts operating at 5 AM.
