SYRIZA: Kasselakis’ Changes Blocked, Name Issue to Be Frozen

Proposals regarding change not to be discussed in today's Secretariat Committee meeting – Possibility not to be addressed by the Central Committee – Panos Rigas on the name issue

Newsroom September 5 11:07

A new setback seems to have arisen in promoting the structural changes desired by SYRIZA PS President Stefanos Kasselakis for transforming the main opposition party. It appears that the proposed changes will not be discussed in today’s meeting of the party’s Political Secretariat at 1 PM, as the committee in charge of reviewing the statutes has not yet finished its work.

Specifically, during yesterday’s lengthy meeting of the SYRIZA PS Statute Committee, participants managed to cover only 10 out of the 50 articles in the new statutes, due to intense discussions over each article. This raises the possibility that Kasselakis’ proposed changes may not be discussed or put to a vote at this weekend’s Central Committee meeting.

Additionally, former SYRIZA PS Secretary and Kasselakis supporter Panos Rigas intervened, requesting that the issue of the party’s new name be addressed only after all 50 articles have been processed, a suggestion that has sparked significant internal debate. This move is seen by many as an indication that the leadership may reconsider the name issue, which has raised concerns even among Kasselakis’ supporters, including the new SYRIZA PS Parliamentary Group Leader, Nikos Pappas, and MP Vasilis Kokkalis.
