Newsroom August 13 07:02

A resurgence occurred after midnight in the fire that hit the area surrounding the Asteroscope of Athens.

As the Institute informed in a Facebook post, “With the help of the cameras we have installed, it was immediately located, the fire brigade team on alert was alerted and it was contained in time. In addition, a patrol was made by two fire trucks around the entire perimeter of our premises to locate small fires which were suppressed. Tomorrow we will investigate whether there has been any damage to the satellite imagery receiving antenna, next to which the resurgence occurred.”

“Monday 12 August was a difficult day for the National Observatory of Athens in Penteli.

The fire gradually but in a short period, after passing at the foot of Koufou Hill, reached our premises, burning bushy vegetation and trees, in an area that we had cleared of dead fuel before and during the fire season, especially around our buildings and scientific instruments. In cooperation with the political leadership of the Ministry of Development, the YCAP, the Unified Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management, and the Fire Service were mobilized and the fire was contained in time, with no damage – as far as we could ascertain from an on-site inspection by a small team from the NCA that investigated the sites on Monday afternoon – to our building complexes and scientific instruments.

But after midnight, at about 00:05 on Tuesday 13 August, there was a resurgence (images). With the help of the cameras we installed, it was immediately located, the fire brigade team on alert was alerted and it was suppressed in time. In addition, two fire trucks patrolled the entire perimeter of our premises to identify minor fires which were also suppressed. Tomorrow we will investigate whether there has been any damage to the satellite imagery receiving antenna, next to which the resurgence occurred.”
