World first for the NTUA shipbuilders

The Oceanos team of the School of Naval Engineering participated in the international competition Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024 with the innovative boat they built and won the 1st place, as well as the Championship prize

Newsroom July 29 09:15

The expertise of Greeks and Greek women in seafaring remains the secret to Greece’s continued dominance. The 5,500 Greek-owned merchant ships control 21% of the world fleet’s carrying capacity. The new generation is taking the baton and showing that it is a worthy successor to the maritime heritage of its ancestors.

Recently, the Oceanos team of the School of Naval Mechanical Engineering representing the National Technical University of Athens and Greece in the international competition Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2024 won 1st place in the general classification, as well as the Championship prize having intense competition from foreign universities.

The team built an electric single-seater boat by entirely designing the energy storage (lithium battery array construction), power transmission (outboard with electric motor), and propulsion systems (propeller design and printing). The support the team received from the NTUA, its laboratories, and professors, as well as from the sponsors who provided material and financial support to the project, was crucial.
