Municipality of Zacharo: The “Blue Flag” will wave again on its beaches

"Our effort includes the cleaning of the coastal communities and the placement of mechanisms to facilitate access for people with mobility needs to the beach," says the mayor of Zacharo, among others

Newsroom July 22 08:11

After an absence of more than ten years, the Blue Flag will once again wave the “Blue Flag”.

The Municipality of Zacharo, with the coordinated actions of the new municipal authority and Mayor Konstantinos Mitropoulos, secured the required pre-approval so that the beaches of Zacharo, Kaiafa and Kakovatos can be certified for clean water, cleanliness of the coast, safety, as well as the services provided to the bathers (WC, WC AMEA, Changing Rooms, Lifeguard Cover, etc.) and post the “Blue Flag” in 2025.

The “Blue Flag” program is implemented in more than fifty countries, as it is a symbol of the quality of coasts and marine waters. The sites are selected according to particularly strict criteria, mainly in municipalities, and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism.

The “Blue Flag” is the world’s most recognized and widespread international ecological quality symbol.

A prerequisite for a coast to be awarded the “Blue Flag” is the classification of its water quality as “Excellent”, meeting the following criteria: cleanliness, organisation, information, safety of bathers and visitors, protection of the natural wealth of the coast and coastal area and environmental awareness.

Visitors attach particular importance to the “Blue Flag” when choosing their holiday destination, as it guarantees the high quality services offered on the coast, environmental protection and public health.

The mayor of Zacharo, Konstantinos Mitropoulos, said: “The Municipality of Zacharo is regaining the trust it deserves. After painstaking efforts, we are particularly happy for this great achievement for our region. The “Blue Flag” will return to the beaches of our Municipality in 2025. The preparatory work we have carried out and the relevant pre-approval we have received proves that in Zacharo we have made our choice: we want to become a sustainable tourist destination.”

“Our goal is to highlight our great comparative advantage, which is none other than the unique natural reserve of our region. We credit the quality of the waters of our seas, as well as the excellent infrastructure on our beaches. We also certify our goal, which is none other than the continuous upgrading of our coastal front. Our efforts include the cleaning of the coastal communities, the installation of mechanisms to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility (SEATRAC) to the beach, the infrastructure of public hygiene and cleanliness, the safety of bathers with lifeguard coverage of the beach and finally, the “Blue Flag”, so that we can get back on the tourist map. We are continuing with all the initiatives needed to give the impetus that the place needs”.
