Scattered outbreaks in Corinth, fire extinguished in Xanthi

Strong firefighting forces remain in the area

Newsroom July 12 08:06

With no active front is the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon in a forest area in Stimanga, Corinthia, but firefighting forces remain in the area as there are scattered outbreaks.

It is recalled that shortly after 19.00 a message was sent by “112” to those in the area to be on standby to evacuate.

Large firefighting forces were thrown into the battle, which were constantly reinforced, while the spokesman of the Fire Department, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, noted that the night would be difficult as at about nine o’clock in the evening the aerial means left and the effort was continued by strong ground forces. Large areas of vineyards and olive trees, as well as forest, were reduced to ashes by the fire.

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias visited the area. He even convened a coordination meeting on the fire with the participation of the relevant ministries and agencies, local authorities and all security bodies.

From the first moment the fire broke out, strong aerial and ground firefighting forces started operating, as it is a very difficult fire due to the very dense vegetation and the unfriendly location. Soon 159 firefighters with 6 forestry teams and 49 vehicles arrived to operate, while 19 air assets, 11 aircraft and 8 helicopters were periodically deployed from the air until last light, including 2 for coordination. Assistance continues to be provided by water trucks and earth-moving equipment from the Municipality, the Region and the Army.

Specifically, late Thursday night a message was sent via 112 to those in the settlements of Pigadia, Neos Zygos and Palios Zygos of Xanthi to stay indoors and close doors and windows due to the ongoing fire. Specifically the message reads:

“Urban fire in Kimmeria of Xanthi. If you are in the settlements of Pigadia Neos Zygos and Palios Zygos, stay indoors, close doors and windows. Follow the instructions of the authorities”.
