Weather: High fire risk – Strong winds, high temperatures & drought until Friday

Attica, Evia, Boeotia, Lesvos, Chios & eastern Peloponnese in the high risk areas

Newsroom June 19 09:31

New warming in the continental areas, but stronger winds in the seas are forecast for today, Wednesday, according to EMY, conditions that are dangerous for the outbreak of fires.

Based on the available forecast data analyzed by the FLAME pyrometeorological team of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA)/meteo.gr, the conditions in Greece are expected to deteriorate significantly throughout the period until Friday. It is the weather of the type Hot – Dry – Windy that may prove to be particularly dangerous for the outbreak and spread of forest fires.

In a statement, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, also asked everyone to be very careful until the weekend.

“From tomorrow and until the weekend the fire risk map will be one step before the red alert level as according to scientists the vegetation has dried up due to the previous heatwave, the thermometer will rise high again and mainly strong winds will blow,” explained Mr. Kikilias and added:

“I call on everyone to show great caution so that forests, property and people are not endangered by frivolous and criminal actions.”

The weather in Attica

Especially in Attica, the weather on Wednesday will be clear with temperatures of 22 – 36 degrees Celsius and north-northeast winds of 4-5, even 7 Beaufort in some places.

The EMY forecasts fair weather with occasional clouds at noon and in the afternoon for Thessaloniki. Winds will be light and the temperature will be between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius.

As for the next few days, on Thursday the temperature will not change significantly. On Friday it will rise slightly and will reach 37 to 38 and in some places 39 degrees Celsius in the mainland. On both days the winds will persist in a large part of the country.

On Saturday the temperature will rise even more and will remain at the same level on Sunday, always with north winds of 3-5 Beaufort.
