Rhodes: life sentence for the son who murdered his father in June 2022

The court did not recognise any mitigating circumstances for Evangelos Koulianos, who murdered George Kariotis

Newsroom May 13 05:03

The Mixed Jury Court of Kos imposed a life sentence to 40-year-old Evangelos Koulianos, for the murder of his 75-year-old father, George Kariotis, in June 2022 in the Medieval town of Rhodes.

The Court found the accused guilty and did not recognise any mitigating circumstances.

The patricide, as reported by dimokratiki.gr, surprised his father from behind, while with a towel he blocked his nose and mouth.

Then he threw him face down on the floor of his house and after climbing on him and immobilising him, pressing the weight of his body on him, he hit the victim’s face on the floor several times.

He then tied his hands behind his back and tightened a rope around his neck until he strangled him.

He denies any connection to the murder:

The 40-year-old, in his plea, claimed he had nothing to do with his father’s murder. However, evidence showed that his bag (yellow, POLO brand) was found on the freezer and next to it a towel soaked in the victim’s blood, traces of which were also found in the defendant’s bag.

During the preliminary investigation, it was established that the 40-year-old had been subject to numerous inconsistencies, which he attributed to memory problems due to an earlier injury caused by a traffic accident.

However, the evidence was considered sufficient to make him guilty as, among other things, he was the last person to visit the victim, which was confirmed by a witness and mobile phone antennas.
