Yemen: Attack on Greek Cypriot-affiliated ship at sea – Three missing, 4 injured

A commercial ship suffered damage from an attack south of Yemen, and coalition forces are providing support, according to the British maritime security service UKMTO.

A vessel flying the flag of Barbados and owned by a U.S. company with Cypriot management was hit by an entity posing as the “Yemeni Navy” and was ordered to change course, separately reported the British insurance company Ambrey.

“Ambrey observed an Indian Navy vessel sailing in close proximity to the last known position of the said ship (…) Further reports indicate that search and rescue operations are underway,” it stated, adding that crew members boarded life rafts.

The incident took place approximately 57 nautical miles southwest of the port of Aden in southern Yemen,” it reported.

“According to a U.S. defense official, smoke was seen emanating from a dry cargo ship flying the flag of Barbados, the True Confidence, off the southern coast of Yemen near Aden.

The official, who requested anonymity, told Reuters that a rescue raft was also spotted in the sea near the ship, without providing further details.

A shipping source stated that three crew members of the vessel in question are missing, and four others have suffered serious burns. There is no Greek national among the crew.

The source, who refused to be named, added that the ship appears to have been abandoned.
