Public sector and transportation workers are striking on Wednesday

Ships are tied up, planes won't fly, taxis are on strike too

Newsroom February 26 02:56

Movement in Athens will be hindered on Wednesday, February 28th, the day of the strike called by ADEDY, as one after another, workers’ unions in the transportation sector announce mobilizations.

Specifically, decisions on how Mass Transit Vehicles (MTV) will operate are made by the trade unions of workers in urban and suburban transport.

Work stoppages will take place on urban buses and trolleys from the start of the shift until 9:00 AM and from 9:00 PM until the end of the shift, according to a decision by the OASA Workers Union.

Traffic is expected to be restored from 10:00 AM or later (vehicles leaving depots at 8:30 AM), while the last routes are expected to depart from the terminals around 8:00 PM.

Additionally, a 24-hour strike will take place on the railway, including the Athens and Thessaloniki Suburban Railway, according to decisions made by workers’ unions (Pan-Hellenic Federation of Railway Workers, Pan-Hellenic Association of Traction Personnel, OSE Workers’ Union, TrainOSE Personnel Association).

The announcement of a strike began with the railway, by the Pan-Hellenic Union of Traction Personnel (train drivers), who are proceeding with mobilizations on February 28th, marking one year since the tragic railway accident in Tempi, which left 57 dead, demanding a full clarification of the causes.

A 24-hour nationwide strike was announced for Friday by the Administrative Board of the Pan-Hellenic Federation of Railway Workers and Fixed Track Means, “both as a sign of respect for the memory of the victims of the tragic accident in Tempi and also sending a message – demand to all directions that for us, the railway workers, above all and above all, is the safety of passengers and workers,” as they point out in their announcement.

Railway workers demand “accountability from the system which historically stood against the railway and the railway workers, who with professional conscience tried and try daily to keep the railway standing. They are the only ones not responsible for all that is happening as for years they have been ‘shouting’ in all directions for the safety of the railway, because they saw what was coming! Accountability and full clarification of the tragic accident and Justice.”
