Zelensky: Navalny was murdered by Putin, who must be held accountable

Putin does not care who dies and is trying to preserve his position, the Ukrainian president said during joint statements with Olaf Scholz

Newsroom February 16 03:38

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pointed to Russian President Vladimir Putin as responsible for the death of dissident Alexei Navalny and called for him to be held accountable.

“Obviously Navalny was murdered by Putin, like so many thousands of others. Putin doesn’t care who dies and is trying to keep his position.

He must be held accountable for his crimes,” Zelensky said at a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

For his part, the German chancellor said that “Russia has not been a democracy for a long time (…) Navalny probably paid for his courage with his life.”

Russia has not been a democracy for a long time.”
