PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi

The leaders discussed matters of energy and labour

Newsroom August 3 04:25

PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis met today with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi during his visit to the African country, while he also visited the memorial to the Greek Fallen in the Battle of El Alamein.

The two leaders discussed cooperation in the energy sector and labour issues, while the Prime Minister thanked the Egyptian President for the assistance his country provided in the response to the recent fires in Greece.

Following his meeting with the Egyptian President, the Prime Minister, in a statement, described it as “brief but productive. As you know, I have an excellent personal relationship with President Sisi and I am here to reaffirm the strategic depth of the Greek-Egyptian relationship and to thank Egypt for the move they made to support our country by sending military helicopters to help us fight the forest fires.

We had the opportunity to discuss all the issues of our cooperation, to make an assessment of the geopolitical situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. To reaffirm that Greece and Egypt are paragons of stability in our wider geopolitical neighbourhood. But also to discuss new prospects for cooperation, with an emphasis on energy issues, since the interconnection between Greece and Egypt through an electricity cable is a project which seems to enjoy the support of the European Union.

But also to reaffirm our willingness to cooperate also on issues related to labour. As you know, at the moment in our country there are significant labour shortages, whether we are talking about the primary sector or construction. And we have put forward a plan to quickly implement this initial idea of cooperation in this sector.”
