Turkish-Cypriot leader: “No one guarantees that there will not be another war in Cyprus”

"Only on the basis of two separate states can there be an agreement in Cyprus" he stated

Newsroom April 18 11:03

Turkish-Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar told the Turkish Cypriot News Agency that the war in Ukraine has shocked the international community but proves that history repeats itself and that no one guarantees that there will not be another war like 1974 in Cyprus, an indirect threat of the Turkish side against the Republic of Cyprus..

He also said provocatively that there is no question of recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey, while reiterating the strategy of “two separate states and peoples” on the island. He said that, since his election he had said that the federation is no longer discussed and that in the dialogue they expect a discussion of two separate states and their own structure.

Tatar said the UN Security Council must take a decision and recognize the sovereign equality and international status of the Turkish Cypriots. He claimed that the Turkish Cypriots were expelled from the Republic of Cyprus by force of arms in 1960 and that everyone knew the intentions of the Greek Cypriots and Greece. He spoke of great differences in the way the two communities perceive the meaning of the federation and that the Greek Cypriots want a united state, the abolition of Turkey’s guarantees and zero army.

He also reiterated that an agreement in Cyprus can only exist on the basis of two separate states living side by side.
