Seaplanes: Ready to fly to these Greek islands

One of the most environmentally friendly means of transportation

Newsroom March 12 09:02

The way is open for a large number of Aquatic Technical Files for seaplane flights that remained stuck due to delays in the Environmental Impact Studies, to move forward.

Indicatively, the Technical Dossiers are ready for the following islands: Rhodes, Kos, Tosi, Kos Karpathos, Kastelorizo, Agathonisi, Kasos, Nisyros, Astypalea, Mykonos, Santorini, Kythnos, Kea, Andros, Sikinos, Serifos, Donoussa, Anafi, Syros, Naxos, Amorgos, Lipsos, Leros, Kalymnos.

The meeting where the green light was given, took place at the Ministry of Environment and Energy a few days after the signing of the Joint Ministerial Decision which accelerates the environmental licensing of waterways.

During the meeting at the Undersecretary, it was reaffirmed that the strategic goal of the Group, “Grecian Air Seaplanes” & “Hellenic Seaports”, remains the cooperation with all the relevant Ministries and the contribution, through its experienced executives, in solving the problems that have delayed the start of seaplane flights in Greece.

Especially for the issue of accelerating the environmental licensing of waterways, the Group has presented data of international studies conducted in countries where seaplanes have been operating for many decades and even with a significant number of flights in strictly protected areas (lakes, national parks, etc.) proving that seaplanes are one of the most environmentally friendly means of transport as their measurable percentages of environmental nuisances are among the lowest in the transport industry.

Also, the executives of “Hellenic Waterways” who participated in the working group that operated the seaplanes in Greece, during the period 2004-2008, collected the statistics of 15,000 flights performed on Ionian islands, including Paxos and Lake Ioannina (which are Natura 2000 sites), on the basis of which it is proved that not the slightest problem of environmental nuisance was created.

Furthermore, seaplanes are at the forefront of the operational “revolution” with electric motors.
