Love at first sight? Myth busted!

Researchers say it's just physical attraction

Newsroom December 4 09:32

Researchers think that love at first sight could actually just be physical attraction.
By analysing when potential partners met for the first time, experts assessed what they call ‘LAFS’.

Describing their results, academics from the University of Zurich, said: “Physical attraction was highly predictive of reporting LAFS.
“We, therefore, suggest that LAFS is not a distinct form of love, but rather a strong initial attraction that some label as LAFS, either in the moment of first sight or retrospectively.”
Data was taken from an online study, a laboratory study and three dating events.
After announcing their engagement, Prince Harry said he thought that Meghan Markle was the one the very first time they met.
The love boffins, however, dispute this.
In fact, they added the claim from partners could “be a memory confabulation construed by couples to enhance their relationship”.
This essentially means they believe we unwittingly lie to ourselves.
A post on Research Digest, from the British Psychological Society, critiqued the academic paper.
Its take on the research said it might inspire “a coming together of sorts” – as romantics and sceptics will join in debating its validity.
The studies involved a total of 396 participants, about 60 percent of them women, mostly heterosexual, young Dutch and German students.
