Torrential rain results in one dead (videos-photos)

Extreme weather expected to continue with temperatures down by 10 points

Newsroom November 28 08:27

A 33-year-old man from the island of Zakynthos lost his life during the intense rainfalls that swept across parts of Greece over the past 2 days. Police recovered his body trapped in his car which had overturned in a ditch near his house in the town of Vanato on Zakynthos that was flooded due to the heavy rainfalls. The torrential downfalls have caused extensive damage on the Ionian islands, with fire department receiving over 50 emergency calls for help since Sunday. Greek authorities have deployed 2 more vehicles, 11 fire engines and 2 rescue dinghies to the island to assist the permanent forces in operations. The rural road Zakynthis-Keri has been closed at the Ampelokikpi juncture, while landslides occurred at Vasiliko and farming lands were destroyed at the village of Kypseli. In the town of Agia Triada and the centre of Zakynthos the fire department is helping citizens to pump out flooded houses and stores. According to sources, the water level in the town of Ampelokipi has risen to over 1 metre leading authorities to shut down the Zakynthos-Keri national highway.

Attica has also been affected by the extreme weather conditions, with the fire department services receiving over 250 distress calls from citizens in need of assistance to pump water out of flooded stores and houses in various suburbs of Athens, while 45 fire fighters and 20 vehicles have been operating for the past 2 days. Tens of vehicles across Attica have been trapped in flooded roads and streets. Meanwhile, the Greek Meteorological Services (EMY) forecasts that bad weather will continue throughout the whole country until late Tuesday with more rains and storms in the areas of the northern Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese, mainland Greece (including Attica) and the Aegean, while the north of the country will see snowfalls and a precipitous drop in temperatures across the Greece of up to 10 degrees celsius.
