Athens by bike

From Kifissia to Faliron

Newsroom November 21 04:51

Attica will soon have a network of bike paths uniting northern Athens with the seaside in Faliron.  The existing network of bike paths from Faliron Bay to Gazi-Thission will extend towards Kifissia with a northern network of bike routes that is 16.7 km in length and will cost 10 million euros to build.

The extension of the bike route was the focal point of the meeting between the Deputy Head of the Northern Sector of Athens, Giorgos Karameros with representatives from the bicycle societies and organizations Podilatisses, Podilattiki, Friends of Bicycles, and Cities for Bicycles. “We are paving the way for bicycles to and from northern Athens.  For us, it is an ecological given,” said Mr. Karameros, who added that “the project complies with international standards and specifications that enhance the safety of the bicyclist en route, and the actual bike routes were devised by bikers based on their knowledge of the roads and their daily movements.”

“Starting from the center of Kifissia near the electric train station, the northern bike route will pass by KAT Hospital in Maroussi and Neratziotissa, continue on through Neo Heraklion, Nea Ionia, Pefkakia, Perissos, Ano Patissia, Kypseli, Plateia Viktoria, Omonia, Monastiraki, Thissio and Gazi, where it will connect with the southern bicycle path that ends up at Faliron bay,” Mr. Karameros said.  “We have created a single 27 km route with the purpose of connecting it with existing municipal routes along the way.”
