Dubai 108–98 Olympiacos in Overtime
At the Coca-Cola Arena, Olympiacos’ five-game winning streak in the EuroLeague came to an end.
The “Reds” were defeated 108–98 in overtime by Dubai in Round 26, seeing their record drop to 16–9. On the other hand, the team from the United Arab Emirates returned to winning ways, improving to 12–14 and remaining within touching distance of the top ten.
The game
Tyler Dorsey was Olympiacos’ leading scorer with 18 points, while Evan Fournier added 16 and knocked down the three-pointer that sent the game to overtime.
Giorgos Bartzokas started the game with Walkup, Dorsey, Ward, Vezenkov and Milutinov and saw his team get off to a poor start for the first time in a while. Dubai jumped out to a 9–2 lead, with Wright and Avramovic causing problems for the red-and-white defense. Olympiacos then found scoring through Dorsey (7 points) and Milutinov (6 points) and managed to balance the game, but the team from the UAE once again found solutions and went up 26–17.
At the start of the second period, Dubai pushed the pace effectively, with their big men (Petrusev and Kabengele) leading the way, while the returning Dzanan Musa hit tough three-pointers to keep the advantage. Evan Fournier immediately made his presence felt in the second quarter with long-range shots, but Dubai continued to find answers in transition. Olympiacos committed several mistakes toward the end of the first half, and the hosts capitalized, running the floor whenever they had the chance. Aleksa Avramovic was the clear MVP of the half, recording 15 points, 3 assists and 4 steals in 14:21, giving his team a 12-point lead (52–40).
Overall, Olympiacos had 10 assists and 10 turnovers in the first half, conceding 13 points off those mistakes, which inevitably left them trailing by a double-digit margin.
In the second half, Olympiacos saw Nikola Milutinov finish effectively around the basket, but Dwayne Bacon answered with consecutive points and tough plays to push Dubai back to +14 (67–53 at 25:29). From that point on, Olympiacos reacted. By turning mistakes into their usual strong ball movement and applying much more pressure on defense, they managed to get back into the game. Vezenkov, Ward and Jones delivered strong performances on both ends of the floor, and Bartzokas’ team closed the period with a 22–30 run, cutting the deficit to four points (74–70) at the end of the third quarter.
Although a dunk by Jones brought Olympiacos within one possession for the first time in a while, Dubai maintained a high level of play. Wright, Bacon and Kabengele pushed the lead back into double digits before Fournier punished the defense with difficult shots from distance. In the final five minutes, Olympiacos fought to come back for a third time, and once again Evan Fournier was there.
The French guard scored 11 points in four minutes, while Alec Peters added five straight to give Olympiacos renewed hope. The Piraeus side took the lead for the first time two minutes before the end of regulation after a basket by the American, but Jurica Golemac’s team had answers once more. Before the final possession, Kabengele made two free throws and Bartzokas called a timeout. Evan Fournier faked on Anderson, created space and hit a three-pointer to send the game to overtime.
In the extra five minutes, Bartzokas’ team failed to rise to the occasion. Missing several easy baskets, Olympiacos gave Dubai momentum. The Reds scored on just one of their eight possessions in overtime, and Dubai sealed the win, 108–98.
