Weather: A return to winter in the coming days – Cold and strong northerly winds – Kolydas’ post

Winter tightens Its grip across Greece as cold spell persists

Newsroom January 17 06:00

Greece is set to remain under a distinctly wintry weather pattern in the coming days, with temperatures staying below seasonal averages as cold air masses continue to move in from the northeast. According to meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas, the cold will be particularly noticeable during the night and early morning hours, reinforcing a prolonged sense of winter across the country.

Strong northerly winds will be another defining feature of the weather, intensifying especially over the Aegean Sea and further enhancing the chill. Intermittent cloud cover is expected to bring local rainfall, mainly to eastern and southern regions, while light snowfall will occur in mountainous areas.

As Mr. Kolydas points out, what sets this weather pattern apart is not its severity but its duration. He describes it as a “normal winter, like in the past,” marked by sustained cold rather than extreme or abrupt phenomena.

Sunday’s Weather Forecast (Hellenic National Meteorological Service – EMY)

In western and central Macedonia, Thessaly, the northern Aegean islands, Evia, eastern Central Greece, and the eastern Peloponnese, skies will be overcast, with local rain or sleet. Light snowfall is expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.

Across the rest of the country, conditions will be partly cloudy, with occasional local rain in the Cyclades and Crete, while light snowfall is forecast for the mountainous regions of Crete.

Winds will blow from easterly directions in western areas at 4 to 6 Beaufort, while in the east they will be northerly at 5 to 7 Beaufort, reaching up to 8 Beaufort locally in the southern Aegean.

Temperatures will remain low:
