Explosions and air-raid sirens in Caracas, Venezuela

Air-raid sirens and explosions were heard in the early hours of Saturday in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.

According to reports, one of the facilities that was hit is Fort Tiuna on the southern side of the city—the main military complex of Venezuela—which houses, among other things, the Ministry of Defense and the Military Academy.

Over the previous period, Donald Trump had repeatedly left open the possibility of a military intervention against Caracas over the issue of drugs.

Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, for his part, rejected Trump’s claims that his government is fostering global drug trafficking, accusing the White House of fabricating a pretext to attack the South American country. In an interview he gave this week to state media, Maduro said that Venezuela is ready to cooperate with American partners in combating drug trafficking.
