  • The number of ILI cases per 1,000 visits has increased compared to the previous week.

Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) – Regardless of Pathogen

  • SARI cases per 1,000 visits remain low, showing a slight decrease from last week.

In a period of increased influenza activity in Greece, recommendations from the EODY

  • Community flu positivity (via the Sentinel Primary Care network) is above the epidemic threshold, indicating the start of seasonal flu activity.
  • Hospital SARI surveillance shows very low flu activity.
  • Two new severe influenza cases required ICU hospitalization, with no new deaths from laboratory-confirmed flu.
  • Retrospectively, one severe ICU case from last week was also reported.
  • Over the last two months, 45 positive flu samples were detected from 1,377 tested samples, all type A.
    • Of the 40 type A subtyped viruses:
      • 22 were A(H1)pdm09
      • 18 were A(H3)
    • Phylogenetic analysis detected the K subclade of A(H3) in three samples.

ECDC Risk Assessment

  • Risk for the general population from A(H3) K subclade is moderate, and high for high-risk groups.
  • Vaccination remains the best preventive measure.
  • High-risk individuals should seek medical care immediately if flu-like symptoms appear for timely antiviral treatment.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

  • RSV positivity in both the community and hospital networks remains low, with only sporadic positive cases detected.
